PLANET CAUCASUS

Old Town Hall, 25-11-2010 - 26-11-2010

PLANET CAUCASUS
The title of project organised within the framework of the Festival of World Cultures is a bit provoking – after all „a planet” is a whole world. Can we call this part of Asia? Europe? a planet and why are we discussing about it here, in Central Europe, already united with the western structures, in an old harbour city that stands much closer to Bremen and Lubeck then to Batumi or Makhachkala.

30. Festival of Music Inspired by Folklore „Sounds of the North”

25th July – 1st August 2010
Gdansk/ Poland

Norwegian Panorama

In 2010 Sounds of the North is dedicated to Norway. During the whole week in the middle of summer Gdańsk will be a meeting place with Norwegian culture and musical tradition. Because of the great care for saving and creative interpretation of their tradition, Norwegians can be proud of many original folk bands and well educated musicians.

Open-air and club concerts during the Festival will introduce Norwegian folk scene to polish audience. We will continue last edition’s idea of workshops that will end up with the Dance Night. This year workshops will be broadened with musical and vocal parts. We are planning projections of documentaries and ethnographic films connected with subject of Scandinavian folk culture. Moreover, there will be a conference about folk music education in Poland and Scandinavia. Engaging in Chopin year celebration we will present folk interpretations of polish genial composer.

This year’s special event – SeaBridge – has been prepared in cooperation with our norwegian Partners: Førde Folk Music Festival and Norwegian Traditional Dance and Music Agency. SeaBridge is the orginal connection of traditional and unique elements belonging to musical culture of both countries. We have invited well known polish group Kroke and norwegian trio Tindra, who will perform at one scene trying to build musical bridge over the Baltic Sea.

6th Festival of World Cultures „Window onto the World” 2010

Gdansk, 18-06-2010 - 20-06-2010

Festival of World Cultures
is not focused on ethno, folk or world music – Festival concentrates mostly on modern creation taking place here and now, being a vivid response given by artists to questions occurring in surrounding reality and seeking for common artistic denominator for people of different cultures. What iterests us are the artistic cooperations, intercultural projects between artists active in countries not of their origins. We would like to offer events which are equally breaking certain boundaries based on stereotypical thinking, and at the same time are exciting, full of joy, infusing audience with energy.

Gdańsk – the city on water

Gdansk, 28-05-2010 - 30-05-2010

Gdańsk – the city on water Start: 4 p.m.

Gdańsk is quite uniquely located at the crossroads of sea and river routes, waterways of the Vistula river at the Baltic estuary, as well as the Radunia and Motława rivers. This specific waterscape and landscape have determined the spatial development of the town. The daily living as shown in literary and iconographic records proves that water was the omnipresent element of the city’s life.

It is important today to show Gdańsk through its relation to water. It could serve as a starting point for the improvement of existing and future public spaces, establishing the directions and the character of the town’s development in the future as well as identifying of challenges. The Gdańsk future vision should incorporate water as the basis for formulating the town’s concept of freedom, creating attractive public space – venue for artistic expression and daily activity of the inhabitants. It’s high time the new image of Gdańsk was developed – that of the town on water, with all its ideological and social consequences.

These and other issued will be addressed by the participants of the panel discussion, as well as the publications: the folder Gdańsk – city on water and the map The journey along the Gdańsk waterway. The texts included there were written according to the most recent research and studies in the historical, archeological and archeological context.

This unusual lesson on the city on water will be accompanied by artistic stops, where artists in different forms of expression will relate to the Gdańsk waterfronts.

The project is organized by the Baltic Sea Cultural Centre in Gdansk, in co-operation with the Society of Polish Town Planners/ Division in Gdańsk, Department of Architecture at Gdańsk University of Technology, Central Maritime Museum, National Archives in Gdańsk, The Association of Polish Archivists/ Division in Gdansk.

The One Minutes Festival

Gdansk, 01-04-2010 - 20-08-2010

The One Minutes (TOM) is a brand name for moving images that last exactly one minute. It fits well in our world of looking quickly, understanding immediately and it is a response to the influence of commercials, video clips and the increased affordability of camera’s, computers and access to Internet. The limited time frame forces the maker to think critically about what he/she would like to show us. The flexibility of the formula and the diversity of dissemination from the street to galleries, tv and festivals make it an attractive and accessible contemporary art form for a broad audience.
