University of Gdansk, Old Town Hall, 21-03-2011 - 22-03-2011

"The North Side of Czesław Miłosz" - International Conference

What means simbolics of romantic North and classical South for works and biography of Czesław Miłosz? In what way the images of south-east Europe and American nature remained in his writings? How do they link with the world of modern metropolies? Who are the Lithuanians and other Balts for him? What are his feelings about Russia, especially Dostojevsky, but also other contemporary poets? Other questions: Miłosz and Scandinavia; William Blake in Miłosz’s writings. One of the most fascinating issues is the role of Oskar V. Miłosz in the works and life of his famous cousine. These are – amon others – questions that we shall adress during the conference.

„ÒPÒWIÉDZ MIE BÔJKÃ... / OPOWIEDZ MI BAJKĘ” - book's premiere
We all know how beautiful, simple but imaginative and wise traditional fairy tales can be. Nevertheless, many also know how rare and underestimated they are on the publishing market… This is why we came up with an idea of preparing a set of Kashubian fairy tales: beside bilingual, Polish-Kashubian, beautifully illustrated book you will also find a CD with texts in actors’ interpretation and specially composed music.

Norwegian Panorama

In 2010 Sounds of the North is dedicated to Norway. During the whole week in the middle of summer Gdańsk will be a meeting place with Norwegian culture and musical tradition. Because of the great care for saving and creative interpretation of their tradition, Norwegians can be proud of many original folk bands and well educated musicians.

Open-air and club concerts during the Festival will introduce Norwegian folk scene to polish audience. We will continue last edition’s idea of workshops that will end up with the Dance Night. This year workshops will be broadened with musical and vocal parts. We are planning projections of documentaries and ethnographic films connected with subject of Scandinavian folk culture. Moreover, there will be a conference about folk music education in Poland and Scandinavia. Engaging in Chopin year celebration we will present folk interpretations of polish genial composer.

This year’s special event – SeaBridge – has been prepared in cooperation with our norwegian Partners: Førde Folk Music Festival and Norwegian Traditional Dance and Music Agency. SeaBridge is the orginal connection of traditional and unique elements belonging to musical culture of both countries. We have invited well known polish group Kroke and norwegian trio Tindra, who will perform at one scene trying to build musical bridge over the Baltic Sea.
