TEXTILE
 
The exhibition presents selected textiles created in the recent years, after 2008, when I finished working for Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk. All of them make a reference to the textile – light and textile — interior relationship. In some works it is an interpretation of light; in others – light implemented in the living tissue of the creation. The latter solutions invoke the eternal function of artistic textiles as a feature of architectural space design. The project is an attempt to restore the space-organising function to textile while retaining its artistic autonomy. 
My focus is on the relationship between the materialised tissue and the immaterial light dispersed on the wall in the background, manifesting itself on open surfaces or even interwoven with the structure of the textiles. The interplay is between the material and the immaterial (but still existing). 
During my cooperation with the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk I displayed my works there many times. One could see those creations as a signal of the issues I found interesting. The TEXTILE exhibition presents pieces created as a follow-up as well as quite different works...

The exhibition accompanies the 10th Baltic Weaving Miniature Triennial in Gdynnia and the 15th International Textile Triennial in Łódź.

Włodzimierz Cygan
B. 1953, studied at the Faculty of Industrial Design of the Academy of Fine Arts in Łódź in 1974–1980.
In 1991 founded the ”Text and Textil – Art of Fibre” magazine. He was the publisher and editor-in-chief of the magazine until 1998. Since 1992 he was member of the editorial board of “Fibres & Textiles in Eastern Europe”.
In 1994–2008 he headed the Department of Textile Art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk. He has cooperated with Łódź University of Technology and now works in the Textile Architecture Institute at the Faculty of Material Technologies and Textile Design. Awarded the title of professor in 2002, he has been in charge of the Department of Unique Textile at the Faculty of Textile and Clothing of Władysław Strzemiński Academy of Fine Arts in Łódź.
In 1989, at the 2nd International Textile Competition in Kyoto he was awarded the International Wool Secretariat prize. In 1995 he received the Artists' Association medal at the 8th International Textile Triennial in Łódź. Winner of the Grand Prix at the 12th International Textile Triennial in Łódź in 2007. In 2010 he was awarded bronze medal at the 6th International Fiber Art Exhibition, “From Lausanne to Beijing”, Henan Art Museum, Zhengzhou, China. Włodzimierz Cygan is also a judge at international competitions and the author of several publications.
