The colours of Pomeranian tradition. Kashubian embroidery - exhibition

The colours of Pomeranian tradition. Kashubian embroidery

Kashubian colours are the colours of the rainbow: cornflower blue – like deep lakes, blue – like the sky, navy – like the unfathomable depths of the sea, yellow – like the sun and ripening wheat fields, green – like forests, red – like blood and poppies in flower garlands on girls' heads and finally brown or black – like the soil waiting to be sown.

Visit St. John's Centre from 23 July onwards to admire Cashubian embroidery and all its variety of patterns, colours and shapes…

You will be able to compare different varieties of embroidery: ”older” from the regions of Wdzydze, Żukowo, Puck and Wejherowo and more “modern” – from Tuchola Forest, Tuchola or Słupsk. The exhibition will include the best entries from the 21st Cashubian Embroidery Competition organised by the Communal Culture Centre in Linia. The numbers demonstrate the immense popularity of this art: more than 400 works were entered in the competition by 178 participants, about 100 of which were children and youth. Prizes and distinctions were awarded to embroiders from the Pomeranian province as well as from Kujawy-Pomeranian province, Cracow and Węgrowo. The entries were assessed by Edmund Szymikowski – the exhibition originator and curator, Jadwiga Sommer, Ewa Gilewska and Benita Grzenkowicz-Ropela. The competition, held under the auspices of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage, was also appreciated by the President of the Republic of Poland, who awarded prizes for the youngest (7-year-old) participant and a vastly experienced embroider – Bernadeta Reglińska from Żukowo, who passes the tricks of the trade to the young generation of embroiders.

All competitors emphasise that participation in the contest in Linia is a great adventure because it combines competition with the possibility of admiring the best embroidery from the whole region in one place. And now, between 23 July and 31 August, this exciting opportunity is offered to residents of Gdańsk and tourists.
