Jozef van Wissem – concert

St. John's Centre,

Master of the violin Jozef van Wissem – concert

10 May 2017, 07:00 p.m.

Jozef van Wissem is the favourite composer of the American director Jim Jarmusch and author of the score for the film titled “Only Lovers Left Alive”, for which he won the Cannes Soundtrack Award in 2013. Film music is just a fraction of his varied artistic activities, in which he also cooperates with Jim Jarmusch.

The two gentlemen like playing in a guitar-and-lute duo and have already released three albums with their music. For Jozef van Wissem lute is not only an instrument for performing old music, but also an excellent tool used in his minimalist music projects (van Wissem likes to compose e.g. pieces for lute and electronics).

His compositions are based on traditional renaissance and baroque scores modified using innovative techniques. They are characterised by a specific atmosphere, often dark and dreamy, ideally suited for films directed by Jarmusch.

Van Wissem's pure, hypnotic and minimalist music creates a unique, transcendental atmosphere, having a powerful effect on the listeners. Van Wissem is continually on tour, giving performances all over the world and at festivals such as “All Tomorrow’s Parties”. He studied and now lives in New York. Now he teaches a subject titled “The Liberation of the Lute” at Harvard, Wesleyan University and  Mills College. He was commissioned by the National Gallery in London to compose a “soundtrack” to “The Ambassadors” – a painting by Hans Holbein. He worked together with Tilda Swinton on the sensational album “The Mystery of Heaven”. Van Wissem is also the author of the soundtrack to the computer game “Sims Medieval”. Recently, the artist has focused on composing film score. The sounds of a special “black lute” made to his order can be heard on his solo album titled “Nihil Obstat”.
