The Baltic Goes Digital - CONTEST

04-04-2012

The Baltic Goes Digital is an open contest for artworks that utilize web-based, mobile or locative media to create a vision of an imaginary, non-existent Baltic City.

The contest is open to artists and anyone interested in its subject matter (e.g. graphic artists, designers, architects, programmers, etc.) from the Baltic states – i.e. Norway, Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Russia, Poland, Germany and Denmark.
The teams need to be composed of a maximum of three people. In such a case, at least 1 member needs to be an artist.

The theme of the contest involves the creation of an imaginary and utopian version of a “Baltic City” – i.e. a town that no longer exists or does not exist yet. Obviously, the very idea of creating a utopian city is nothing new. History knows many urban planning and architectural designs that aimed to create the perfect municipal tapestry that would be ideal for its residents. What is new is the fact that the starting point of our “The Baltic Goes Digital” contest is modern technique that supports unlimited urban visions. Taking advantage of the fact that the internet allows us to get to know the world, we would like to invite artists to compose interactive spaces combining the cultural and urban aspects of cities located on the Baltic Sea. The digitally-generated cities can be both a combination of existing ones, expansions or improvements on them or a utopian vision of a single Baltic city that goes beyond our reality or remains parallel to it.
We invite artists and teams whose projects explore and redefine the public space concept. We ask whether the new digitalized public space offered by the internet can be used to create and communicate art. Can works of art that function in the internet arena or are widely accessible through our mobile phones be treated in the same way as a  sculpture in the main square of a city? What new public space opportunities are offered by these new technologies? We invite artists to submit projects that explore these issues and provide interesting answers.

Deadline:
The deadline for submitting applications for the contest is the 15th of June 2012.

Contest regulations:
The regulations for the contest have been specified in the “The Baltic Goes Digital Contest Guidelines”, which are available at www.artline-southbaltic.eu

"Streetwaves" were awarded!

13-12-2011

The Streetwaves project organized by the Baltic Sea Cultural Centre and Gdansk 2016 office was awarded by monthly Aktivist in category Event 2011.

Organizers have written in explanation: Artistic interludes between announcements on the railway station in Gdansk after arrival of suburban train? Minisets in the lift? Events in Przeróbka, Stogi, Nowy Port and on the railway station? Concerts in the backyards, public toilets and on the beach? Murals, points of renovation of clothes, happenings? It is brilliant! We want the same! Unfortunately in Warsaw there are neither coastal districts nor the Streetwaves festival: District - Capitol. That is a pity, because the Streetwaves had introduced the ideas, which  animated the city. Altough Gdansk was not chosen as the Capitol of Culture 2016 we look forward, that it still organize initiatives of this type. We constantly associate the Tricity with alternative music scene and original art. This compound, in combination with untypical location - became the greatest asset of the Streetwaves.

The award for the Streetwaves was received by an inventor of the event - Natalia Cyrzan.

Project "WEBSR2 Upgrade" initiates in international art contest on wind energy

19-06-2011

The main idea of the South Baltic project Wind energy in the BSR – the Upgrade is to overcome some of the obstacles standing on the way of developing the wind energy in the Baltic Sea countries.
The Upgrade
project choses a sensuous approach to wind energy use. By bringing energy production from this renewable source into the public urban space, art enables an aesthetic experience that allows a very different approach to the topic – far away from so frequently used tools as information campaigns, listing advantages etc.

"we are more" - support the action by signing the manifesto!

14-05-2011

In July, the European Commission will officially launch discussions on how much money will be spent on culture in the next EU budget. The Comission will also question the shape and content of the EU Culture Programme: currently, direct support for arts and culture represents 0.05% of the total EU budget. we are more believes this does not properly reflect the importance of arts and culture in the development of all European societies - if you agree, join the action and sign the manifesto!
