“So and I write about Romani, Romani customs and Romani world”
A. Kuźmiak, Papusza

How do we write and think about Romani people in Poland and Europe? About this minority living with us and somehow apart – minority?

In the title we include a certain duality of the discourse. We also understand it metaphorically – as obvious self-description of the Romani people, but also as a sign of problems with describing their complex individual and collective identity.
We will try to tackle this important cultural and social phenomenon through scientific reflection, literary description, journalistic reporting and artistic sensitivity.

The project “WORLD OF ROMANI, PROBLEMS OF ROMANI PEOPLE” (26-29.2015) is prepared within “Meetings with the world” held during this year’s XI edition of the Festival of World Culture. We want to point to important currents in researches of Romani culture. We will approach their story from ethnographical, sociological, historical, political and legal level, we will tell the story of this rich “World of Romani” ; their customs and mythology, their believes, tradition, customs and taboos; their identity and related dilemmas; their inner multiculturalism, problems of exclusion, stigmatisation and the force of stereotypes, legal and political condition of Romani society.

We are aware that growing interest in the Romani identity, rich and various culture is expressed also in the language of art: literary narration, movies, photography and music. Artist’s fascination brings this minority back to multicultural dialogue. Being different becomes present and visible, but is it understood ? – this is yet another question.

The program of this interdisciplinary project “World of Romani. Problems of Romani people” aims to grasp multiple reception of Romani in Poland and Europe. We have invited scientists, writers, reporters, photographers, musicians and curators, local government activists and politicians. Most of all we invite people related to Romani society. For all participants of the project we have prepared rich program of events.
