“Art Noveau” (France), “Modern Style” (England), “Jugend Stil” (Germany), but also Flemish contemptuous name “Paling Stijl” (eel style) – these are some examples picturing the scope of this trend which since 1900 spread across Europe and other continents. Polish name of the style “MODERNIZM” – has some distinctive representatives with Wyspiański ahead, although he himself didn’t identify with the movement. Gdańsk, unlike Sopot was not a stronghold of the style. Gothic, Renaissance – yes, but Jugendstil hardly any. Gdańsk Photography Society with this exhibition wants, in a modest scope, give the city a hint of the atmosphere, in its ambitious but also pastiche or even kitsch versions, as many critics have described this style.
