The art of fibre. Small, smaller, the smallest – EXHIBITION

The art of fibre. Small, smaller, the smallest – EXHIBITION

Barbara Polkowska-Ugwu, Barbara Westman, Agata Zielińska-Głowacka – these are three artists working in widely understood art of fibres, in the dialogue with each other, presenting small forms.

Barbara Polkowska-Ugwu:

The miniatur form opens unlimited possiblities for artistic expression. In weaving the most important thing is succinctness like in haiku. I like to apply assemblage, giving totally new meaning to objects and materials I used. So these forms are surprising and thought-provoking.

Barbara Polkowska-Ugwu graduated from Fine Arts Academy in Gdańsk in 1987. She does weaving, painting, arranging exhibitions, she lectures and is an author of textbooks for teaching fine arts. She is a laureate of awards and distinctions. Her art-works are in the collections of Centralen Muzeum Włókiennictwa in Lodz, Museum of Gdynia and in private collections in France, Canada, Germany, USA, GB and Poland.

Barbara Westman graduated from Fine Arts Academy in Poznań receiving the master degree in graphics and artistic weaving. Since 2002 she lives in USA, where she teaches graphics and the art of fibre at state university at Slippery Rock in Pennsylvania.
Works: 4 panels. Works made of black industrial fibres.
Title of works : “Grass 1”, Grass 2”, Grass 3”, Grass 4”.
The works are illustrating interpretations of field grass observed at various spots, caught in motion, burnt by the sun. The form of the grass is simplified, taken down to simple shape, almost abstract and devoid of colour and details. By using cuts in the textiles I try to give 3 dimensional impression to flat surface. This minimalistic approach to the grass leaves space for interpretation.

Opening exhibition : 15.07.2015
Open every day until 4.08.2015 from 10:00 to 18:00
