Exhibition "Aarhus - art as a Social Dialogue

Barbara Katzin Aarhus - art as Social Dialogue (photography)

Aarhus, the second largest Danish city, is also a partner city of Gdańsk. In 2017 it was the European Capital of Culture. As usual on such occasions, there was an extensive cultural programme prepared for many years. However, most of them presented events from the so-called cultural mainstream. And yet Aarhus is the place where many off-site activities are carried out. This is facilitated by local educational background. In the city, apart from Aarhus Kunstakademi, there is also a private Jutland Art Academy, focused on preparing future artists to undertake conceptual activities in art.

Barbara Katzin is an American born in Connecticut, who in the 1980 chose Denmark as a place of her artistic studies. At that time, she did not foresee a permanent link with that country. Lives in Aarhus and deals with analogue and digital photography. For more than twenty years, she has been documenting artistic activities in this city: murals, actions, performance, etc. Her archive is still an undiscovered, fascinating resource.

The aim of the exhibition is to select and present photographic documentation of the most interesting events from alternative artistic life in Aarhus from the artist's archive. This exhibition will attempt to show the culture of Aarhus from a different perspective from that proposed by the European Capital of Culture programme.
