Rood-beam from St. John's Church

In 1482 Hans Notsow, a skipper from Gdańsk, funded a new splendid rood-beam with wooden sculptures to be placed in St. John’s Church. The beam supported the cross with statues of St. Mary and St. John. It had stayed in St. John’s Church till 1943 when most works of art were evacuated from the church to save them from the ravages of war. Unfortunately, after the end of the war many of them did not return to the church. The cross found the shelter in Holly Trinity’s Church in Gdańsk.

The Baltic Sea Cultural Centre has been supervising the reconstruction of St. John’s Church since 1996. We have managed to bring back to it valuable monuments such as the high altar built in 17th century by Abraham van den Block, the stone tomb of Nathaneal SchrÓder and some of the grave slabs covering the floor. Now, on 20 March the cross from the rood-beam is coming back to St. John’s Church.
