Concert of Basia Trzetrzelewska at the St. John's Centre grand opening

St. John’s church is a magical space loved not only by the members of public, but also artists performing here. Since 1995 we’ve been happy to take care of it – maintaining the neglected building, revealing its beauty, but also creating a venue for concerts, performances, exhibitions. In order to increase the standard of events taking place in the church in 2009 we’ve started a project of Revalorisation and adaptation the St. John’s church into the St. John’s Centre (funds were granted by the Regional Operating Programme for Pomorskie Voivodship). In June 2011, when the project terminates and all the works are finished, the Centre will be one of the most modern venues in Pomerania, an interesting spot not only for artists and public, but also for turists.

We are very happy to invite you to the grand opening of the Centre. For this special occasion we’ve invited a special guest – Basia Trzetrzelewska.

Basia Trzetrzelewska has started her musical career in the 70s in Poland, but moving to London was her ticket to international success. For a few years she sang with the jazz-pop band Matt Bianco and in 1985 she has started her solo career.
Basia is known for her characteristc sound – a mixture of modern jazz and pop flavoured with latino influences. Her music is most popular in USA, Japan, Great Britan and France.

A central element of Lunae Descriptio, project realised in the framework of Jan Hevelius Year, will be specially designed table-multimedia audiovisual instrument. Its center-piece will be sculptured into the shape of moon surface – just as Hevelius, noticed it in 1647. Music played live will be an integral part of the event. Members of the audience will be able to observe details taking place on a table thanks to a specially designed and built screen transmitting picture from the sistem of video cameras.
The spectacle will be presented several times.

For the second part of August we’ve planned an event Świątynia Sztuk Wszelkich (Temple of All Arts). Artists invited to the project in multimedia presentations, installations, live acts and music will present tangeled history of the church, Gdansk and Poland.

In September Leszek Możdżer, one of the most talented and famous young Polish musician will perform in the St. John’s Centre. The artist will present a piece inspired by the space and composed specially for it.

We will close the cycle with an exhibition, Art in Exile presenting works of the Polish painters who emigrated after the World War II. For the first time the audience will see next to each other paintings of such artists as Henryk Gotlib, Marek Żuławski, Tadeusz Ruszkowski or Feliks Topolski.
