"Art in Exile | Sztuka na uchodźstwie" – exhibition

The exhibition that we will present in the St. John’s Centre is a continuation of the first in Gdansk presentation of the Polish post-war painters-emigrants. In March 2010 within an exhibition Painting Exodus (Malarski Exodus) we presented 20 works of 10 different painters who emigrated to Great Britain after the war.

However, the exhibition currently presented in the St. John’s Centre significantly differs from the previous one. What we intended last year was more to itroduce the theme, rather than create a representative image of it. This time we want to develop it and not only remind names and paintings of authors-emigrants, but also proove that some of them were acclaimed not only in Polish surroundings, but they also managed to enchant the English critics and art lovers.

For a special focus deserve works of Henryk Gotlib, a great colourist who delighted British art critics. We shall also present rarely shown oil on canvas paintings by a great illustrator, Feliks Topolski. He managed to get a special recognition among the members of the Royal Family. We will also present a few works of Zdzisław Ruszkowski, one of the best documented Polish artists in England and works of Marek Żuławski.

Every Polish or European museum would love to have such a collection, nevertheless, these paintings come from a private collection of Tomasz Zieleniewski, who since a long time ago has been fascinated with this art and who actively promotes it. We are proud to be the first to publicaly present the collection.

Curator, Anna Zalewska
