Watching revolution through a hole in the wall

Watching Revolution through a hole in the wall:

Escape Routes and Freedom Mirages

Since the beginning of the Syrian uprising in 2011, Foundland has documented the use and misuse of media and investigated how information about what is occurring within the context of the on-going Syrian regime led warfare manifests on Facebook and social media. Foundland’s new multi-media installation called, “Escape Routes and Freedom Mirages”, presents an updated survey of the Syrian situation from the perspective of the disenchanted and displaced. Many Syrians, within the country and those who have fled abroad, find themselves disillusioned and distant from any hope of revolution, intervention or return to their former life. Starting over means re-evaluation of personal relations and notions of home, creating escape routes and locating loopholes in order to re-imagine the future.

Foundland is a Syrian–South African art and design collaboration based in Amsterdam. Their focus since 2011 has been on the unpacking of the complex and sometimes mysterious use of online images within the context of the Syrian uprising, particularly digital images made for propaganda purposes by both the Al-Assad regime and opposition groups. Over the past two years they have presented collections of images, lectures and interpretations of found information scavenged from the Internet, with the aim of re-looking, re-formulating and trying to understand the current Syrian situation.
