Drawings of Jan Siekiera

The drawings of Jan Siekiera attracted me from the first sight. How is it that even the littlest versions of the works appear majestic? And how did the artist through the abstract form managed to express so much substance? I almost feel the movement and pulsation of water and perhaps other elements – it is best to look for impressions for yourself.

Jan Siekiera took part in many individual and group exhibitions. The gallery of the Baltic Sea Cultural Centre in Gdansk presents his latest works which has not been exhibited anywhere else before.

Jan Siekiera on himself:

In 1994, I graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, Graphics Department. During my studies I realised it is drawings that speak to me the most, so I started... to sail. I graduated from the Marine Academy in Gdynia and I am a navigator at merchant ships. But the drawing was my companion all the time both onboard and at home.

For a long time I was dissatisfied with my works, but for the last couple of years I haven’t thrown any of them away. I express myself in abstraction with two elements which matter to me the most: my emotions and fascination by the water surface. Observations of water, horizons is crucial in my professional work and it’s also a source of continuous inspiration.

I use the simplest means to build my world. At the beginning there is always a white sheet of paper and a pencil.

The exhibition of Jan Siekiera is open in the Gallery of the Baltic Sea Cultural Centre in Gdańsk, Old Town Hall, until 12th March from 9:00 am to 6 pm.
