The Baltic Sea Cultural Centre in Gdańsk has frequently explored culture, tradition and traditional music of Pomorskie region. This time, together with Festiwal Radykalna Kultura Polska (Radical Polish Culture Festival) we gathered artists who – under the brand Radical Pomeranian Orchestra – will carry out musical research, basing on local traditions from Pomorskie and – specifically – Kashubia.

For this unusual combo, we invited Tricity musicians such as Emil MiszkJakub Klemensiewicz or Emiter, as well as artists from other parts of Poland. Led by the violinist Maciej Filipczuk, the musicians combine traditional folk music with its proper performing techniques, with the composing practice of improvisational music of the avant-garde, jazz and classical music.

The Orchestra will play original themes and melodies from Pomorskie in new arrangements and premiere compositions referring to the regional Pomeranian musical heritage with performing techniques, intstruments, and most of all – the seaside sound ambient.

The Radical Pomeranian Orchestra is an open project born of willingness to attract audience to the musical traditions of Pomorskie. We believe that by searching for new language for tradition we make it a vivid continuum of today rather than a museum.
