All lovers of horror, contestants of red hearts and romantic dinners by candlelight, the Baltic Sea Cultural Center in Gdańsk invites you to "Gothic Valentine's Day in St. John's Centre".

On February 14, 2023, at the St. Jana, there will be a special Valentine's Day event, which will be set by the screening of Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau's cult film "Nosferatu - a symphony of horror" (1922) with an electro-acoustic setting played live by the duo Emiter/Żuławy.

"Nosferatu" is a film classic, considered one of the best horror films from the silent film period and at the same time the most interesting examples of film expressionism. Its dark and depressive stage design and the depiction of a vampire figure devoid of a commercialized, romantic note will gladden the heart of anyone feeling sick at the thought of Valentine's Day sweetness.

The plot of the film was loosely based on the book "Dracula" by Bram Stoker, and thanks to numerous adaptations, it has become a permanent fixture in pop culture. The film tells the story of a young real estate agent who travels from Wisborg to the Carpathians to finalize the sale of a property with a mysterious earl. On the spot, it turns out that the count has some peculiar tendencies. After tasting his guest's blood, he targets his beautiful wife waiting for him at home. What else will the hero discover and will he manage to thwart the vampire's plans? Even if you know the answer to these questions, the unique aura of St. John's Centre and a modern musical interpretation will make you rediscover this story.

The vampiric screening will be preceded by a completely unromantic walk. Through the streets of Gdańsk, from the Old Town Hall to the Church of St. John will be guided by Michał Ślubowski. During the journey, two threads will intertwine - macabre and love. Can the city executioner find true love? Did Elżbieta Heweliusz have an affair? Why did women often hide within the walls of the monastery? We will answer these and other questions during the walk!

Especially for this special evening, in the Gothic walls of the St. John's Centre and the space under the church tower, which is inaccessible to guests on a daily basis, an exhibition will be arranged filled with existential pain and physical in form, textile objects by Małgorzata Kalinowska.
